Football – a Talent Hunt with Difference

It’s evident that I am indulging a lot in Cricket. But there has to be some reason why the top menu in my site includes “Sports” and not just “Cricket” – because there are more sports that I am involved with.

It’s the perfect juncture to start talking about football, right when a wonderful initiative is being carried out to search for talented football players amongst the underprivileged children of India. For this purpose a UK based organization – “Consortium for Street Children (CSC)” has collaborated with Indian NGOs such as Salaam Baalak trust and they have roped in Vikash Dhorasoo as their ambassador.

For the uninitiated, Vikash Dhorasoo is a French footballer of Indian origin. He had played for France in the 2006 FIFA world cup. Besides his professional football legacy, Vikash is a multifaceted person, has acted, has modeled, has been playing poker, has been working for social causes, and has produced a bare-all documentary on the French dressing room, called “Substitute” – as an upshot of having played under the shadows of Zinedine Zidane.

Recently Vikash was in Delhi for the inaugural match to kick start the football talent hunt. Renedy Singh – the vice captain of the East Bengal club also participated. Vikash and Renedy came face-to-face, each leading a team of children at the football grounds of St. Columbus School.

While Renedy kept mostly to himself – avoiding the media and the who’s who that had gathered, Vikash was engrossed in the activities on and off field. Renedy was his spirited self only when he was in the midst of the enthusiastic kids. Vikash came across as very humble and shy; yet warm enough to indulge in conversations and photographs. I was of course click-happy as can be seen in the gallery here!
